After starting WinXP, why do my desktop icons flash continuously while the System Idle level varies

This seems to be associated with the startup process since a restart usually clears this condition.

I have run virus checks as well as adware and spyware but seem to be free of those problems.

I can usually clear the problem, at least temporarily by clicking CTRL-ALT-any key.

Your programs are coming up, and your screen is being redrawn, and you interrupt the process when you press they key combination.

your hard drive is haunted -- sell it on e-bay
I think you have too much stuff going on at startup. Go to Start%26gt;Run and type in MSCONFIG and to to the startup tab...you shouldn't really have more than 10 things going on there. If so, stop the processes you don't need at startup.
try to run dos based virus removal tool such as SuperDat from McAfee site. some windows virus can't be detected by advanced anti-virus softwares.

to extract the superDat. type this at command prompt in windows:

SDATxxxx.exe /e c:\superdatscanner

you should find a new folder in drive c: the same as above
